Football Saturdays in Iowa City: Hawkeye Football Tailgating, Traditions & Game Day Fun.
Fall in Iowa City means crisp air, black and gold everywhere, and tens of thousands of Hawkeye fans descending on town for football Saturday. And around here, the party starts long before kickoff. For the classic experience, Melrose Avenue is tailgate central, with yards, driveways and parking lots surrounding Kinnick transforming into a sea of tents, grills and Hawkeye gear. New for 2026 is the Tigerhawk Beer Garden at Krause Family Plaza, just south of Kinnick, with food, drinks, music and entertainment—and you don’t even need a game ticket to join the pregame festivities.
If you’re skipping the stadium, you can still get plenty of game-day atmosphere. Downtown favorites like Joe’s Place, The Airliner and Donnelly’s Pub put you right in the middle of the downtown action, while Big Grove Brewery & Taproom offers plenty of room, big screens and an official Hawkeye watch-party atmosphere. Over in Coralville, Iowa Athletic Club is another sports-centric option with plenty of TVs. If you want in on the tailgating action…but would like to avoid the traffic in Iowa City, consider some of the sports bars and taprooms in North Liberty such as Field Day Brewing, Red’s Alehouse and Tin Roost.
Of course, game day isn’t just about tailgating. There’s the Hawk Walk before kickoff, the Hawkeye Marching Band, the team taking the field to “Back in Black,” the I-O-W-A chant and, most meaningfully, the Iowa Wave to the kids and families watching from Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Whether you’re inside Kinnick, tailgating on Melrose or watching from a local bar, football Saturdays are one of those electric experiences that make Iowa City feel like Iowa City.
