Smile, you’re on camera…Surveillance, be it cameras, audio, or both, is alarmingly and increasingly becoming more omnipresent in our lives. Chances are likely if you’ve been shopping for homes, you’re on camera. Many sellers utilizie some sort of surveillance–from doorbell cameras, to interior cameras in plain sight, to hidden “nanny cams.” Sellers tend to think of of cameras more as “security” to keep track of their home while they’re away, but to buyers it can feel more like prying eyes (and ears) that leave a negative impression about the property. Even if home buyers don’t SEE a camera while touring a home, savvy prospective buyers should assume one is watching and be cautious in what they do and say. Surveillance is also impacting how buyers react to homes and how sellers handle offer negotiations. Did you know that covertly recording conversations at your own home when you’re not present is illegal in many states if you haven’t followed the proper steps? Find out more about how security camera and audio are impacting real estate and the home buying and selling process.
