Riverside

The future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk

Riverside, located in Washington County, is a small town 13 miles south of Iowa City, stakes its claim to fame as the future birthplace of Star Trek’s Captain James T Kirk, on March 22, 2228. An engraved monument commemorating the event can be found behind the small yellow hair salon building on Highway 22–look for the banner on the street light pole near the yellow building. The community celebrates the momentous campy future event yearly during its summer festival, TrekFest. Check out the schedule of events here.

In the present day, Riverside is also home to the Riverside Golf Resort and Casino. The venue draws in people looking for a night out, a weekend away or a longer retreat. Learn more about the amenities here.

Riverside is a logical choice for home buyers looking for a small town atmosphere not too far from the more major metro areas of Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty. An easy drive north on Highway 218 takes travelers straight to Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Because Riverside is located in Washington County, residents enjoy lower property tax rates than those living in neighboring counties to the north.
