Quarantine and social distancing can be hard on kids (and grown-ups). If you’re allowed to leave the house, a small trip out can boost everyone’s mood, and some time spent outdoors is good medicine for the heart, mind and soul. The weather doesn’t need to be beautiful to still have fun. Go find an outdoor space to explore! Even on a gray day kids will run around, wack things with sticks, find interesting fossils and animal tracks, throw rocks in the water, roll around in the sand and generally be rowdy and have fun. We took a day hike to Macbride State Park, in Solon, Iowa, for a walk in the woods and time spend playing on the beach, and then we had a picnic lunch. We didn’t encounter a single other person, so social distancing was still a success as we work as a community to “flatten the curve”!
