10 Top Kitchen Trends

  1. Three tone kitchens. Two tone kitchens have been growing in popularity for the last few years, and it is not uncommon to see upper cabinets one color while the lower cabinets another color, or the island cabinets a different color than the perimeter ones. Now designers are building on that theme with three tone kitchens. The three-tone kitchen plays with asymmetry, keeps the eye moving, and helps define different zones of the kitchen space.

  • Blue Cabinets. Black, navy and grey have been popular in the colored cabinet scene the past few years, especially as accent cabinets, and now people are expanding their love of blue into more blue tones on more cabinet surfaces, which is not surprising. After all, the Pantone Color Institute picked Classic Blue is its 2020 Color of the Year.
  • Wood cabinets. There is a growing trend in interior design to bring “the outside in,” or highlight natural elements in home design. That’s showing up in wood cabinets in the kitchen. You might be cringing while envisioning vast swaths of honey oak, but take a deep breath and consider other classic wood options like the gorgeous wood grain patterns of walnut, or the light airiness of maple.

  • Wood accents are also showing up in statement locations like the island countertop. Butcher block, anyone?
  • While we’re on the topic of kitchen islands, let’s chat about islands so big they’ve moved into the realm of being more like continents than islands. Research shows that about 1/3 of homeowners renovating their kitchen opt for a kitchen island more than 7 feet long!
  • To match those supersized kitchen islands, homeowners are in love with supersized statement light fixtures over the island.

  • Mixed metals. The kitchen is ground zero for homeowners wanting to play with the mixed metal interior design trend. Most advice seems to point at keeping it to three main metals, or less, in a space. For example, gold hardware, stainless appliances and black light fixtures. All those blue cabinets will really pop with gold or brass hardware!
  • Custom appliance colors. The days of white, black, stainless, or gunmetal grey appliances may be coming to an end. Stylish homeowners can now choose custom appliance colors to add a pop of unexpected color to their kitchen
  • Slab backsplashes. Say goodbye to grout lines and instead consider extending your countertop material up the backsplash for a clean and seamless look. You don’t always have to match. Some people want the clean lines of a slab backsplash, but they view it as an opportunity to make an art-like statement with a gorgeous piece of granite.

  • Custom storage solutions. Nobody wants to have a show-stopping kitchen, but a cluttered countertop because there isn’t a good place to store all your gadgets. Custom storage solutions are on the rise for all the gadgets and odds and ends that you keep in your kitchen.

Cheers!
